Luxury Cabin NC – Top 10 Things to Do

These are our top favorites, we provide details, directions, maps, etc. at the cabins.

Cullasaja Gorge –The drive between Franklin and Highlands, Cullasaja Gorge, has been awarded one of National Geographic’s 50 Drives of a Lifetime.  It is definitely a bucket list item.   You will pass 3 waterfalls, one of which you can walk down to and behind the falls.  This drive is part of the Mountain Waterfalls Byway.  See Waterfalls & Scenic Drives pages for more info.

Stop at Dry Falls – on your way through the Gorge.  Walk down steps to the falls.  You can walk behind without getting wet (thus the name “Dry” Falls).

Hiking  – The Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina offer some of the best hiking anywhere.  From simple walks to difficult trails.  The Appalachian Trail (Georgia to Maine) passes just a few miles West of Franklin and can be accessed at many places.  The Bartram Trail also passes through Franklin going East to West.
Hiking to Waterfalls is awesome!

Picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway  – Accessing The Blue Ridge Parkway is an easy 35 minute drive from the house.  You can turn one way and take the Parkway to Asheville and another way into Cherokee.  The views are amazing and you can be  at the highest point of the Parkway, Richland Balsam Overlook at an elevation of 6,053 feet, in about 15 min. from accessing the Parkway.

Lunch at The Pisgah Inn – Great food and amazing views of the Mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway (25 min. southwest of Asheville).

Go Fishing/learn to Fly Fish –  The streams surrounding Franklin, NC offer some of the best trout fishing you’ll find anywhere.  Fish the Cullasaja or Little Tennesee River, or be more adventurous and take to some of the hidden back streams in the Nantahala National Forest.  There are many outfitters and guides in our area to assure you’ll find the best fishing hole.

Kayaking & Rafting on the world famous Nantahala River & lunching at Rivers End (watching the kayakers on the river).

Gem Mining –  Gem Mining has been a popular activity in our area since mining was introduced in 1870 by Tiffany & Company (the world famous jeweler) prospecting for ruby, sapphire, emerald and more.  This area is one of the few places in the world where gem stones are accessible at the earth’s surface. Franklin is known as the “Gem Capital of the World”.  You’ll find many active gem mines open to the public.   At some you can grab a bucket and dig and at others you walk up to the platform area and they dump buckets (already salted with gems-great for the kids) for you to sift through.  Fun for all ages.

Shop Local – Enjoy shopping, antiquing, restaurants, breweries & festivals in Historic Downtown Franklin.  Voted Top Small Town by Blue Ridge Outdoors.

Doing nothing – relaxing with a beverage of choice – enjoying the luxury of having a comfortable cabin for your vacation.
